Veterinarian
Dr Robert Ness graduated from the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine in 1990 with a devotion to avian and exotic pet medicine. His initial employment was as the first associate veterinarian for one of the first all avian and exotic pet practices in the country, where he worked for nearly ten years. In addition, he served another three years as the head exotic veterinarian for a prominent group of veterinary practices, which was also in the Chicago area. During his tenure at these practices, Dr Ness continued to expand his knowledge and training as an exotic pet veterinarian, but kept feeling that there was more to being an animal healer than just mainstream medicine. Recognizing the limitations of standard conventional medicine for common problems and chronic diseases encountered in his patients, Dr Ness began exploring the realm of holistic medicine. He continues to develop his wealth of knowledge by adding new and innovative treatments to his practice, becoming widely respected and regarded in the field of Avian and Exotic Pet Medicine, especially in the field of Integrative Holistic Therapy. He is currently one of the few practitioners in the country practicing Integrative Therapy for Avian and Exotic Pets. Dr Ness has made numerous contributions to the field of holistic exotic pet medicine throughout his profession in publications, lectures and consultations.
In June 2002, Ness Exotic Wellness Center was established as an alternative to the typical veterinary practice. Initially, Dr Ness practiced as a traveling house call veterinarian in addition to leasing space from other established practices. As the exotic pet practice grew, Dr Ness built the current facility in Lisle, Illinois, which opened in February 2008. The practice continues to flourish with exciting plans to expand both the number of practicing doctors in 2026 and the size of the facility itself in 2027.
Dr Ness enjoys spending time with his family, traveling, hiking, boating and bird watching. His family consists of his wife, two adult sons and one teenage daughter. He shares his home with his wife and daughter, along with their menagerie of a miniature poodle (Frenchie), two rabbits (Daisy & Pansy), hedgehog (Tater Tot), leopard gecko (Inigo) & Indian ringneck parakeet (Kiana).
